Car loan interest deduction 2026: how much will it save you?
A single filer with $110,001 of modified AGI deducts $0 of the 2026 interest on a $40,000 new-car loan at 7%, bought in March 2026. Under $100,000, the same loan saves $241 of federal tax in 2026 in the 12% bracket and $441 in the 22% bracket. Over the three tax years the deduction has left, that is $748 and $1,371.

What the deduction saves, in one paragraph
Long story short, the deduction is worth the interest you pay in the year times your marginal tax rate. On a $40,000 loan at 7% that is a few hundred dollars a year until the deduction ends after 2028. The rules: for tax years 2025 to 2028 you can deduct up to $10,000 a year of interest per tax return, whatever your filing status, on a loan for a new, US-assembled personal vehicle. You don't need to itemize. The deduction phases out above $100,000 of modified AGI ($200,000 on a joint return), according to the IRS summary of the new deductions. You claim it on Schedule 1-A of Form 1040.
Interest you pay in 2026, 2027 and 2028
The examples here use the standard amortization formula: each month's interest is the balance owed times the monthly rate, and the rest of the payment pays down the loan, so the interest shrinks as the balance does. The final regulations treat interest as accruing daily on the balance, so the interest on your lender's statement can differ a little from these examples.
payment = loan × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)−n), where i = yearly rate ÷ 12 and n = number of payments
For $40,000 at 7% over 72 months: $681.96 = $40,000 × 0.5833% ÷ (1 − (1 + 0.5833%)−72). The first month's interest is $40,000 × 0.5833% = $233.33. Seven percent is close to the Federal Reserve's August 2026 bank averages of 7.54% for 60-month and 7.17% for 72-month new-car loans.
Bought in March 2026 with the first payment in April, this loan makes 9 payments in 2026 and 12 in each of 2027 and 2028:
| Tax year | Payments | Interest paid | Tax saved at 12% | Tax saved at 22% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 9 | $2,004.49 | $240.54 | $440.99 |
| 2027 | 12 | $2,325.09 | $279.01 | $511.52 |
| 2028 | 12 | $1,901.58 | $228.19 | $418.35 |
| 2026 to 2028 | 33 | $6,231.17 | $747.74 | $1,370.86 |
2027 brings the most interest because it has 12 payments against 9 in 2026. The last 39 payments carry $2,869.97 of interest that no deduction covers, because the law ends with tax year 2028.
Besides the loan size and rate, when you bought changes the interest you pay in 2026. A loan from March 2025 makes payments 10 to 21 in 2026, all 12 months:
| Loan and rate | Bought March 2026 | Bought March 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| $30,000 at 5% | $1,070.75 | $1,232.44 |
| $30,000 at 7% | $1,503.37 | $1,743.82 |
| $30,000 at 9% | $1,938.23 | $2,264.99 |
| $40,000 at 5% | $1,427.67 | $1,643.26 |
| $40,000 at 7% | $2,004.49 | $2,325.09 |
| $40,000 at 9% | $2,584.31 | $3,019.99 |
| $50,000 at 5% | $1,784.59 | $2,054.07 |
| $50,000 at 7% | $2,505.62 | $2,906.36 |
| $50,000 at 9% | $3,230.39 | $3,774.99 |
To get your own figure, enter your loan in the auto loan calculator, switch the schedule to By month and add the interest of the months whose payments fall in 2026. Bought in March 2026 with the first payment in April, that is Months 1 to 9. For the payments you have already made, your lender's statements show the interest you actually paid.

The phase-out cliff
Above the income threshold, the final regulations (T.D. 10054) reduce the deduction by $200 for each $1,000 (or part of $1,000) of modified AGI over $100,000 ($200,000 on a joint return). The reduction comes off the interest you can deduct, and a few hundred dollars of interest doesn't survive it for long.
| Modified AGI | Reduction | Deduction left |
|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | $0 | $2,004.49 |
| $104,500 | $1,000 | $1,004.49 |
| $108,400 | $1,800 | $204.49 |
| $110,000 | $2,000 | $4.49 |
| $110,001 | $2,200 | $0 |
A joint return follows the same steps from $200,000, so this loan's deduction is gone above $210,000. What does it mean for your own loan? As a rule of thumb, your deduction reaches $0 at about $100,000 plus 5 times the year's interest ($200,000 plus 5 times on a joint return). Only the full $10,000 lasts until $150,000 single; a smaller deduction ends sooner.
Why the $10,000 cap rarely matters
The cap only binds on big loans. At 9% over 72 months, a $118,000 loan pays $9,989.57 of interest in its first 12 payments and a $120,000 loan pays $10,158.89, so the cap starts to bite near $118,000 of loan in a full calendar year.
What you save is the deduction times your marginal tax rate, the rate on your last dollar of taxable income. In 2026 the 22% bracket starts at $50,400 of taxable income for a single filer and $100,800 on a joint return. The 24% bracket starts at $105,700 and $211,400, according to the IRS figures for 2026. With the standard deduction of $16,100 single or $32,200 joint, a single filer at $100,000 of modified AGI has about $83,900 of taxable income and a joint filer at $200,000 about $167,800. Both are in the 22% bracket at most, so nearly everyone below the phase-out threshold saves 22% of their interest or less.
The deduction lowers your taxable income, so if you owe no federal income tax, it saves nothing.
What qualifies, in brief
- A new vehicle: used ones don't qualify, and the loan documents must treat the vehicle as new.
- Final assembly in the United States, shown on the vehicle information label (window sticker) or by the plant in your VIN in the NHTSA VIN decoder.
- A car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup or motorcycle under 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating.
- A loan taken out after December 31, 2024, secured by a first lien on the vehicle, for personal use more than half the time.
- No leases and no purchases on a credit card. A refinanced loan counts up to the original loan's balance at the time you refinance.
- Negative equity from a trade-in rolled into the loan doesn't count. Financed warranties, service plans, GAP coverage, sales tax and vehicle fees bought with the car do.
The rules come from the final regulations published in September 2026. With $5,000 of negative equity in the $40,000 loan, only 87.5% of each interest payment qualifies: $1,753.93 of the 2026 interest.

How to claim it
You claim the deduction on Schedule 1-A and enter the vehicle's VIN, as the Form 1040 instructions explain. A missing or wrong VIN can bring a CP321N notice, and the fix is an amended return with the full VIN. The 2026 Schedule 1-A is still a draft, so its line numbers can change before you file.
Lenders that receive $600 or more of interest in the year must send you a statement of the interest received, on Form 1098-VLI. If you weigh a shorter loan against a longer one, the 72-month car loan comparison shows how the term changes the interest.
Questions people ask
- Is car loan interest tax deductible in 2026?
Yes, for a new, US-assembled personal vehicle bought with a loan taken out after 2024: up to $10,000 a year for tax years 2025 to 2028, reduced above $100,000 of modified AGI ($200,000 joint).
- Does a used car qualify for the car loan interest deduction?
No. Its original use must start with you, and the loan documents must treat it as new.
- What if I don't get a Form 1098-VLI?
Lenders must send one only when they receive $600 or more of interest in the year. Your loan statements show the interest you paid, and the deduction needs the VIN on your return.
- Is the car loan interest deduction a tax credit?
No. It lowers your taxable income, so it saves your marginal tax rate times the interest: $440.99 at 22% on $2,004.49. If you owe no federal income tax, it saves nothing.
- How do I check if my car was assembled in the US?
Look for the final assembly point on the vehicle information label (window sticker), or enter the VIN in the NHTSA VIN decoder and read the plant of manufacture.
